Here at Best Sunbeds we are asked a lot of questions related to tanning. So, we’ve created a list of popular questions for your information. Take a read of the list below, you can always ring us on 01865 718 485 if you have any questions!
How many times a week can I tan?
First of all, you need to know whether you should be tanning or not. The following people should not use sunbeds:
People with skin type 1, Under 18’s, those taking medications that cause photosensitivity, and people with a family history of skin cancer.
Not one of these people?
A safe bet is moderate tanning of roughly 2 – 3 tanning sessions a week. However, please make sure you rest your skin for at least 24 hours between each session. If you have Skin Type 2, it is usually recommended that you give it a rest for 48 hours.
Why do some salons offer longer sessions than others?
At first this can seem confusing. It varies based on the tubes that are fitted in the sunbeds. Some tubes are stronger than others, and therefore you must limit your exposure time. A professional salon worker will be able to judge and advise your sessions based on your skin type and the stage your tan is already at. This means they can recommend a bed with weaker / stronger tubes etc. All professional salons will keep your skin type on a record for future tanning.
Many salons will be equipped with „0.3 Compliant” tubes, which is an EU regulation. (Requires sunbeds to have a maximum irradiance level of 0.3W/m2 ) These sessions can therefore be increased as the UV output isn’t so intense.
Can sunbeds give me skin cancer?
There are two types of skin cancer.
Non melanoma, which can normally be treated fairly easily.
The other is malignant melanoma, which can be fatal if not treated early enough.
There is evidence pointing to sunburns and UV over-exposure to being a risk factor for skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to control exposure to UV.
Sunbeds provide a controlled tanning environment and deliver appropriate levels of UV to ensure safety and sufficient tanning.
Naturally tanning in the sun means that the body can be exposed to different levels of UV rays, depending on the time of day, location, month, etc. With sunbeds, a tanning schedule can be developed to ensure that skin types and tube strength are taken into consideration to maximise safety and avoid burning.
